Biography

Gene is Head of Target’s San Francisco Innovation Office and is Vice President-Consumer IoT where he leads the company’s push into the consumer segment of the “internet of things” industry.   His responsibilities also include operating Target’s experiential smart device concept store, Open House.

Gene previously led Target corporate strategy at the $70B retailer and has been directly involved in incubating a variety of growth initiatives ranging from private label brands to new retail store formats to ecommerce acquisitions and digital entertainment.  Gene co-championed Target’s internal design thinking practice, built its first retail prototyping center, and is currently a TechStars Mentor.

Prior to joining Target, Gene designed robotics in the automation industry and led new product development in the US.  Outside of work, he serves as an Advisor to Recycle Across America and is also an active angel investor/advisor in several start-ups.  He received an MBA from the Chicago Booth School of Business and holds an Engineering degree from the University of Illinois- Champaign Urbana.
